The problem with drops

Over-the-counter drops can do more harm than good.

Reaching for artificial tears feels like the obvious fix. But most drops only cover up the symptoms — and many contain added chemicals and preservatives that can damage your eyes over time. They mask the problem instead of solving it.

This concern is consistent with findings from the TFOS DEWS II report on the potential toxicity of preservatives in frequently used eye drops.

They mask, they don't heal

Over-the-counter drops soothe the surface for minutes, then wear off. The underlying disease keeps progressing while you feel temporarily better.

Added chemicals & preservatives

Many drops contain preservatives and additives that, with frequent use, can irritate and damage the very surface they claim to protect.

Dependence, not resolution

The more you reach for the bottle, the more your eyes rely on it — without ever restoring the natural film that keeps them comfortable.

Nothing replaces real tears

No artificial drop can reproduce the 2,000+ biological compounds your own tears use to defend, nourish and lubricate your eyes.

The science of your tears

Your natural tears are a living, biological shield.

Healthy tears contain more than 2,000 complex compounds working together every time you blink. No drop on the shelf can recreate them.

Fight bacteria & inflammation

Natural antimicrobial proteins protect the surface from infection and calm irritation.

Deliver oxygen to the cornea

Your tears nourish the cornea, which has no blood vessels of its own.

Lubricate & protect

A stable film keeps the eye smooth, clear and comfortable all day.

Our approach

We treat your eyes so they heal themselves.

Instead of masking symptoms, our goal at Carousel Eyecare is to restore the glands and tissue responsible for your tears — so your eyes produce their own healthy, stable film naturally. We use the latest technology to make that happen, each chosen for what your eyes specifically need.

Advanced treatments

Every therapy, explained — not just listed.

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) for dry eye treatment at Carousel Eyecare
01

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL)

Gentle pulses of light target the inflammation and abnormal blood vessels around the eyelids that drive dry eye. IPL warms and clears the meibomian glands, helping them release the healthy oils that keep your tears from evaporating too quickly.

Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) Eye Drops

Custom eye drops made from your own blood plasma — concentrated with the same growth factors your body uses to heal. Because PRP is rich in these growth factors, it actively repairs the cornea and regenerates the delicate corneal nerves, restoring sensation and comfort in a way no synthetic drop can match.

Scleral Contact Lenses

In cases of extreme dryness and a lack of natural tears, scleral contact lenses act as a fluid reservoir, continuously bathing the cornea in lubrication throughout the day. Dr. Wells uses advanced imaging of the cornea and sclera to design a lens that's not only therapeutic for dryness but also highly customized — making it exceptionally comfortable to wear.

Dr. Caroline Wells

Doctor of Optometry · Dry Eye Specialist

"My goal is for my patients to stop thinking about their eyes — to relieve the pain, the burning and that constant dry, gritty feeling, stabilize their vision and restore their natural tears. Above all, I want them to no longer depend on lubricating drops to get through the day."

At Carousel Eyecare in Katy, Dr. Wells combines advanced technology with a deeply personal approach to dry eye. Every plan starts with understanding the real cause of your discomfort — then treating it at the source. Practicing in the West Houston / Katy area since 2013, she has focused on dry eye since optometry school — back when most patients left with little more than a thermal mask and a bottle of drops. She has followed and adopted every major advancement in dry eye therapy since, and her passion is using that technology to build an individualized therapeutic plan for each patient.

Why dry eye is personal to me

I've lived with dry eye since childhood. I have nocturnal lagophthalmos — my eyes don't fully close while I sleep — and growing up in the extremely dry climate of Egypt only made it worse. Over years of learning my own body, I discovered that dairy is highly inflammatory for me and worsens my dryness. It's a perfect example of why root-cause detective work matters so much.

As a wife and mom of two, I understand the emotional toll dry eye takes. I've seen patients lose function — unable to drive at night, sleep comfortably, or enjoy the hobbies they love. My mission is to help them regain that function, and their confidence along with it.

Credentials

  • Optometry school: Doctor of Optometry, University of Houston College of Optometry, 2013
  • Undergraduate: B.S. in Biology and Christianity, Houston Christian University
  • Practicing since: 2013, in the West Houston / Katy area
  • Focus: Dry eye disease, meibomian gland dysfunction & scleral lenses

Common questions

Dry eye, answered.

What causes dry eye?+

Most dry eye is 'evaporative,' caused by meibomian gland dysfunction — the oil glands in your eyelids stop producing the healthy oils that keep tears from evaporating. Inflammation, screen use, contact lenses, hormonal changes, and environmental factors can all contribute. A consultation determines the specific cause behind your symptoms and the right plan.

Why do my eyes water if they're dry?+

It sounds backwards, but reflex tearing is a classic sign of dry eye. When the surface of the eye becomes dry and irritated, it triggers a flood of watery tears that lack the oily layer needed to stay put — so they simply run off instead of soothing the eye. Treating the underlying dryness usually calms the watering.

Do artificial tears make dry eye worse?+

Artificial tears can relieve symptoms briefly, but they don't treat the cause and some contain preservatives that, with frequent use, can irritate the ocular surface. This is consistent with findings from the TFOS DEWS II report on preservative toxicity. Drops have their place, but lasting relief comes from restoring your own tear production.

What is IPL and does it work for dry eye?+

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) uses pulses of light to reduce the inflammation and abnormal blood vessels that drive meibomian gland dysfunction, and gently warms the glands so they flow again. It's one of the most effective in-office treatments for evaporative and rosacea-related dry eye. Your response is assessed over a short series of sessions.

Are PRP eye drops safe?+

PRP (platelet-rich plasma) eye drops are made from your own blood, so there's no risk of donor disease transmission or preservative reactions. They're prepared under sterile conditions and contain natural growth factors that help heal the cornea. Dr. Wells reviews your health history to confirm they're appropriate before recommending them.

How much does dry eye treatment cost in Katy or Houston?+

Cost varies widely because every treatment plan is built around the cause and severity of your dry eye. Rather than quote a single price, we determine the right combination of therapies during your consultation — and our free workshops are a great way to understand the options before you commit.

How many treatment sessions will I need?+

It depends on your diagnosis. Therapies like IPL and radiofrequency are typically delivered as a short series spaced a few weeks apart, sometimes followed by periodic maintenance. Some patients need only a few sessions; others with more advanced disease need a longer plan. Your consultation sets realistic expectations.

What happens at the dry eye workshop?+

Our live workshops let you see the treatment technology in person, learn what's actually causing dry eye, and ask Dr. Wells your questions in a relaxed setting. It's an easy, no-pressure way to understand your options before scheduling a full evaluation and personalized plan.

Do you serve patients from Houston, Cypress and Cinco Ranch?+

Yes. Carousel Eyecare is in Katy, TX and regularly cares for patients from Cinco Ranch, Cypress, Memorial, West Houston, and the greater Houston area. Our location off I-10 and the Grand Parkway makes us convenient for much of west Houston.

Is dry eye curable?+

Dry eye is usually a chronic condition, but it is very manageable. By treating the root cause — rather than masking symptoms — many patients achieve lasting comfort and reduce or eliminate their reliance on drops. The goal is to stabilize the ocular surface so you stop thinking about your eyes.
