Advanced Dry Eye Treatment

IPL for Dry Eye in Katy, TX

Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) is one of the most effective in-office treatments for evaporative dry eye and meibomian gland dysfunction (MGD). At Carousel Eyecare in Katy, TX, Dr. Caroline Wells uses IPL to calm the inflammation that keeps your oil glands from working — so your tears stop evaporating too quickly.

How IPL treats the cause of dry eye

The majority of dry eye is evaporative, meaning the eyes make enough watery tears but the oily (lipid) layer that seals them in is missing or poor. That oil comes from the meibomian glands lining your eyelids. When these glands become inflamed and clogged, the tear film breaks up in seconds and the surface of the eye dries out.

IPL delivers precise pulses of broad-spectrum light to the skin around the eyelids. The light is absorbed by the abnormal blood vessels that drive chronic inflammation, gently closing them off and reducing the inflammatory signals reaching the glands. The gentle warmth also helps liquefy hardened oils so the glands can flow freely again.

Because it targets the underlying inflammation rather than masking symptoms, IPL is especially helpful for people whose dry eye is linked to rosacea, ocular rosacea, and demodex-related lid disease.

What a session feels like

Before treatment, protective shields are placed over your eyes. A cooling gel is applied to the treatment area across the cheeks and around the eyelids. During each pulse you may feel a brief warm snap, similar to a light rubber-band tap — most patients find it very tolerable and no numbing is required.

A single session typically takes about 15 to 30 minutes. There is little to no downtime; you can usually return to your normal day right afterward, though we may ask you to use sun protection on the treated skin.

How many sessions are typical

IPL for dry eye is usually delivered as a short series of sessions spaced a few weeks apart, often followed by periodic maintenance. The exact number depends on the severity of your gland disease and how your eyes respond. Many patients notice progressive improvement in comfort over the course of the series.

Dr. Wells frequently pairs IPL with meibomian gland expression and other therapies as part of a tailored plan. Your consultation determines the right combination and schedule for your eyes.

Who is a good candidate

IPL is well suited to adults with evaporative dry eye, meibomian gland dysfunction, and rosacea-related eyelid inflammation. It is not appropriate for everyone — certain skin types, recent tanning, some medications, and specific medical conditions require caution. A thorough evaluation with Dr. Wells confirms whether IPL is safe and appropriate for you.
