Scleral Lenses for Severe Dry Eye in Katy, TX

For extreme dryness and a lack of natural tears, scleral contact lenses can be life-changing. At Carousel Eyecare in Katy, TX, Dr. Caroline Wells designs custom scleral lenses that act as a fluid reservoir, continuously bathing the cornea in lubrication throughout the day.

A fluid reservoir over the cornea

A scleral lens is larger than a standard contact lens and rests on the white of the eye (the sclera), vaulting completely over the cornea. The space between the lens and the cornea is filled with sterile fluid, so the front surface of your eye is bathed in lubrication from the moment you insert the lens until you remove it.

For patients whose eyes simply cannot make or hold enough tears, this constant cushion of fluid provides comfort and clearer, more stable vision that drops alone cannot deliver.

Custom-imaged for a precise fit

Dr. Wells uses advanced imaging of the cornea and sclera to map the exact shape of your eye. This allows each lens to be designed specifically for you — not only therapeutic for dryness, but highly customized for an exceptionally comfortable fit.

Because the lens vaults the cornea, it can also mask surface irregularities, often improving vision for eyes that have been through surface damage or previous procedures.

Who benefits from scleral lenses

Scleral lenses are ideal for severe or advanced dry eye, aqueous-deficient dry eye, and surfaces that remain uncomfortable despite other therapies. They are frequently used alongside our other treatments so the eye continues to heal while you stay comfortable. Your consultation and imaging determine the right lens design for you.
